WASHINGTON, DC- Today, the Congressional Black Associates remember and pay homage to the Honorable Elijah Cummings. Chairman Cummings was the embodiment of fighting for what you believe in while leading with integrity. During his time in Congress, he inspired everyone he encountered, especially young black congressional staffers.
Long before Chairman Cummings became a Member of Congress, he was advocating for equality. At the tender age of 11, Cummings fought to have a local swimming pool in Baltimore, Maryland integrated while being violently attacked with bottles and rocks. This glimpse of fighting for equality foreshadowed the impactful legacy Chairman Cummings would eventually leave.
During a time of heightened partisanship, Chairman Cummings never missed an opportunity to champion civility and served as a constant reminder that we all have the ability to rise above and come together to serve a greater cause.
We send our prayers and deepest condolences to Congressman Cummings’ family, staff, and loved ones as we mourn and celebrate the life of a great man. The world is better because of the life and legacy of Chairman Elijah Cummings.
