CBA and LGBT CSA Celebrate DC Black Pride Weekend and National Pride Month

WASHINGTON, DC - In celebration of DC Black Pride Weekend and National Pride Month, the Congressional Black Associates (CBA) and the LGBT Congressional Staff Association (LGBT CSA) would like to recognize the contributions of black members in the U.S. House of Representatives LGBT community and express our continued support for the goal to make all spaces on the Hill accessible to every person, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month (LGBT Pride Month) is celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Greenwich Village, New York. The Stonewall uprising, led by trans women of color was a pivotal point in the United States in which the gay liberation movement boldly challenged societal shame and advocated for equal rights. National Pride month and DC Black Pride weekend was created shortly after to peacefully protest, celebrate, and uplift those in the LGBTQ community while paying homage to those we have lost to acts of hate and HIV/AIDS. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.
Throughout the years there have been a number of Members of Congress who have openly expressed their support for LGBTQ staffers while emphasizing the importance of protecting staff from discrimination. Most recently, the Congressional Black Caucus announced it has created an emergency Task Force on black LGBT youth, Black Youth Suicide and Mental Health that will address a growing problem of suicide and access to mental health among LGBT youth.
For CBA and the LGBT CSA, Pride month is critical - it is a time of not only celebration, but to reaffirm our shared goal of an inclusive Capitol Hill community. CBA and the LGBT CSA stand proudly together and will continue to demonstrate our support for all staffers regardless of their background, sexual orientation and gender identity. CBA continues to do this while honoring its mission, which is to support black Capitol Hill Staffers through professional development, social networking, and community engagement.
