CBA's Capitol Chronicles: Connecting with the Community

On July 27 2019, the Congressional Black Associates had the opportunity to collaborate with DC local food bank, the Capital Area Food Bank. Our members learned about the process of packaging food to be distributed to families living throughout the DMV area. When we arrived, we were greeted by Thomas Vines whose personality can only be described as larger than life.

The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest organization in the Washington metro area working to solve hunger and its companion problems: chronic undernutrition, heart disease, and obesity. By partnering with over 450 community organizations in DC, MD, and VA, as well as delivering food directly into hard to reach areas, the CAFB is helping nearly half a million people each year get access to good, healthy food.

The food bank offers a variety of different programs that include; the Urban Demonstration Garden which is a half-acre urban farm attached to the Capital Area Food Bank’s DC Warehouse. The garden is designed as a learning laboratory where partner agencies and community members can learn how to grow healthy, nutritious food in the urban environment.
