The Congressional Black Associates Statement on Black History Month

WASHINGTON, DC - The Congressional Black Associates (CBA) released the following statement today in recognition of Black History Month, which began this past weekend:

“Since 1976, the United States has connoted the month of February as Black History Month and celebrated the overwhelming contributions of African Americans to this country, democracy, and freedom. This month, CBA is proud to join in honoring the movement-starters, chain-breakers, and freedom fighters that paved and continue to pave the way for all of us.

“The Congressional Black Associates Executive Board understands that we stand on the backs of giants and for forty years, the CBA has sought to provide community while uplifting the critical roles Black congressional staffers play on the Hill. During this month, we remember iconic Black figures who bravely challenged overt racism and oppression, and fought for our own prosperity and advancement. We also pay deep respect to Members in Congress, such as Congressman John Lewis and the late Elijiah Cummings, who devoted their lives to advancing civil rights and equality.

“Black History Month 2020’s theme, ‘African Americans and the Vote,’ compels us to reflect on the adversity African Americans have confronted in achieving full democratic freedoms, the immense progress that has been made, and the challenges that must still be addressed.

“There is still much to be accomplished, so much work to do, and so much history to make. In this monumental year for CBA, we commit ourselves to continuing the fight much like those before us. This month and the year ahead, we proudly center our events around Black excellence, resilience, and pride. In doing so, we pay homage to our predecessors and add refine our own signature to Black history.”
